I loved The Little Prince ever since my first birthday when my mom dressed me up as the Little Prince and gave everyone at the party a rose with the inscription – “It is not the rose but the time you spend with the rose that makes it beautiful.” My mom would read it to me when I was little but I truly came to love it as a young adult when I read it for the first time by myself. The story of the Little Prince teaches us all to look rightly with the heart and seek truth and beauty with the idea in mind, that which is essential is often invisible to the eye. My favorite quote of all from the book is “All grown ups were once children.” It is a beautiful book for young and old and a wonderful story to read time and time again – always discovering something new about our life’s journey.

I never thought I would read a book about vampires. I was the last person inducted into this cult because I am not necessarily a fan of fantasy subjects. But after reading the Twilight Series it is nearly impossible to not fall in love with this story. I am no longer surprised why my entire generation is infatuated with the love affair of Bella and Edward. If you’re looking for a guilty pleasure and a sappy romance this is it.

This international bestseller by Muriel Barbery from France is without a doubt the best book I have read this year. This graceful novel has two narrators, a plump 50 year old autodidact French concierge Renee and Paloma, a persicious and refined 12 year old who wants to commit suicide because she believes the world is meaningless. The story slowly evolves into a beautiful love story and eloquent commentary on elegance, love, death and unexpected friendship. Like a Japanese Haiku- simple and elegant and profound. This beautifully written novel is filled with deep philosophical passages that were so visual and elegantly constructed, I felt like I was in their apartments watching it all unfold. I will definitely read this book again at different points in my life. A must read for 2009.

To Kill a Mockingbird has everything one could want in a novel: unforgettable characters, mystery, historical significance, good and evil, childhood innocence and wise lessons for all. Best known as a “coming of age” book set in racially tense times in the south, it is more than that. It is a book that reminds us to question conventional wisdom and to remember that things are not always what they seem. Through the eyes of a child, we learn that most of the characters are far more complex individuals than their accepted town stereotypes. We see that evil can flourish if it is unchallenged by those who are good. We see courage and strength where we least expect it. Most importantly, we are inspired by the self-assurance that results from always acting in accordance with one’s beliefs. My aunt told me that she reads this book once a year, after reading it for myself I know why.
