Diesel\, A Bookstore in Oakland is pleased to present another installment of Poetry Flash on Sunday\, March 21 at 3pm with poets Janet Holmes and Rusty Morrison.
Janet Holmes' new book of poems\, The ms of m y kin\, as she explains\, is derived by erasure from The Poems of Emily Dickinson\, and so 'the manuscript of my kin'. She is the award-winning author of four previous books of poems\, most recently F2F. She is also Editor of Ahsahta Press\, an avant-garde poetry press.
Rusty Morrison's first book of poems\, Whethering\, won the Colorado Prize for Poetry\; her second\, The True Keeps Calm Biding Its Story\, won the 2007 Sawtooth Poetry Prize from Ahsahta Press\, selected by Peter Gizzi\, and then the James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets for the best second book of poetry published in America that year. Morrison is co-founder and co-editor of Omnidawn Publishing.

Robert S. Levinson is the bestselling author of the stand-alone novels In the Key of Death\, Where the Lies Begin and Ask a Dead Man\, as well as the Neil Gulliver and Stevie Marriner series of mystery-thrillers\, which to date comprises The Elvis and Marilyn Affair\, The James Dean Affair\, The John Lennon Affair\, and Hot Paint.
He won the Short Mystery Fiction Society's Best Short Story Derringer Award last year for "\;The Quick Brown Fox\,"\; a short that originally appeared in Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. Diesel\, A Bookstore in Brentwood is very excited to present a Literary Luncheon with acclaimed author Anchee Min in celebration of her newest novel\, Pearl of China an historical narrative about the life of Pearl S. Buck\, author of The Good Earth\, on Wednesday\, April 7.
Anchee Min was born in Shanghai in 1957. During the Cultural Revolution\, she was ordered to denounce Pearl Buck as an American imperialist. At seventeen\, she was sent to a labor collective\, where a talent scout for Madame Mao’s Shanghai Film Studio recruited her to work as a movie actress. Min moved to the United States in 1984. Her first book\, the memoir Red Azalea\, became an international bestseller and was published in twenty countries.

Diesel\, A Bookstore in Oakland is proud to present Judith Tannenbaum as she discusses and signs By Heart\: Poetry\, Prison\, and Two Lives\, a two-person memoir she wrote with Spoon Jackson that explores art\, education\, prison\, possibility\, as well as which children our world nurtures and which it shuns\, on Thursday\, April 8 at 7pm.
Judith Tannenbaum is a poet\, writer\, and teacher who has shared poetry in California public schools and state prisons and spoken nationally about teaching arts and prison arts. She is the author of memoir\, poetry\, texts for teachers\, and guidebooks\, including the Manual For Artists Working In Prison. She currently serves as training coordinator with WritersCorps\, a program of the San Francisco Arts Commission.

Spoon Jackson is a published writer who began serving a Life Without Possibility of Parole sentence in 1977. His work has received awards from the William James Association’s Prison
Arts Project and from PEN American Center’s Prison Writing Program and has been used as text in films and musical suites. He facilitates two creative writing classes for prisoners at
California State Prison\, Sacramento.

Diesel\, A Bookstore in Brentwood is pleased to welcome Michael Asimow to the shop to discuss and sign copies of Lawyers in Your Living Room!\: Law on Television\, an anthology he has edited that features 38 chapters about law and lawyers on television\, on Sunday\, April 11 at 3pm. Asimow will be joined by contributors Paul Bergman and David Ginsberg.
Lawyers in Your Living Room starts with the classic shows of the 1960’s — Perry Mason and The Defenders. It continues with the shows of the 1980’s\, including L.A. Law\, and the 1990’s\, like Ally McBeal\, Murder One\, and The Practice. It goes right up to the present\, with chapters on Law &\; Order\, Boston Legal\, Shark\, Damages\, JAG\, and many other audience favorites.
There are chapters on the daytime judges like Judge Judy\, as well as foreign shows including Rumpole of the Bailey. Several chapters discuss non-lawyer shows in which lawyers played important roles\, such as The West Wing\, The Simpsons\, and Seinfeld. The book contains chapters on the cultural impact of television lawyer shows and the ethics of television lawyers as well as discussions of writing lawyer shows and furnishing technical advice to the producers.
Editor Michael Asimow is a professor of law emeritus at UCLA Law School and visiting professor\, Stanford Law School. He’s the co-author of Law and Popular Culture (2004) and Reel Justice\: The Courtroom Goes to the Movies (2006). Asimow gathered 40 professors\, jury consultants\, TV writers\, and technical consultants to write chapters in this book.
Paul Bergman is a Professor of Law Emeritus at the UCLA School of Law. Paul has authored books on Trial Advocacy\, Evidence and Counseling as well as three books on the legal system for non-lawyers. Along with Michael Asimow\, Paul is also the author of Reel Justice\: The Courtroom Goes to the Movies\, which explores the depiction of law and lawyers in courtroom films. Paul has given film clip-based presentations to groups of lawyers and judges all over the country\, and has written numerous articles analyzing how law and lawyers are depicted in films and on TV.
David R. Ginsburg is a Lecturer in Law and the Executive Director of the Entertainment and Media Law and Policy Program at the UCLA School of Law\, where he teaches entertainment law and a seminar on entertainment law research and writing. He practiced law for ten years before becoming an independent producer and motion picture executive. He served as the President of Artisan Pictures\, the Alliance Atlantis Motion Picture Group\, and Citadel Entertainment\, and he was a partner of Sidley Austin LLP. He has over 50 film and television credits\, and his productions have been awarded the Emmy\, the Golden Globe and the Humanitas Prize. Prof. Ginsburg is a member of the Motion Picture and Television Academies\, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts/LA\, the Los Angeles Copyright Society\, the Producers Guild of America\, and the state bars of California and Hawaii. He has been an expert witness in several federal and state litigation matters. He is a graduate of both UCLA and its School of Law (where he was the Editor-in-Chief of the UCLA Law Review)\, and he was a Danforth Foundation Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
