Diesel, A Bookstore in Oakland is totally psyched to welcome Greil Marcus back to the store to read from, discuss and sign When That Rough God Goes Riding: Listening to Van Morrison, a revelatory exploration of Van Morrison: what makes him one of the most unique musical artists of our time and what distinguishes his most transcendent moments, on Thursday, May 13 at 7pm.
Greil Marcus was born in San Francisco and earned an undergraduate degree in American Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, where he also did graduate work in political science. He has been a rock critic and columnist for Rolling Stone (where he was the first reviews editor, at $30 a week) and other publications, including The Village Voice and Artforum. From 1983 to 1989, Marcus was on the Board of Directors for the National Book Critics Circle.

Diesel, A Bookstore in Brentwood is proud to present Judith Tannenbaum as she discusses and signs By Heart: Poetry, Prison, and Two Lives, a two-person memoir she wrote with Spoon Jackson that explores art, education, prison, possibility, as well as which children our world nurtures and which it shuns, on Thursday, May 13 at 7pm.
Judith Tannenbaum is a poet, writer, and teacher who has shared poetry in California public schools and state prisons and spoken nationally about teaching arts and prison arts. She is the author of memoir, poetry, texts for teachers, and guidebooks, including the Manual For Artists Working In Prison. She currently serves as training coordinator with WritersCorps, a program of the San Francisco Arts Commission.
Spoon Jackson is a published writer who began serving a Life Without Possibility of Parole sentence in 1977. His work has received awards from the William James Association’s Prison
Arts Project and from PEN American Center’s Prison Writing Program and has been used as text in films and musical suites. He facilitates two creative writing classes for prisoners at
California State Prison, Sacramento.
