Diesel, A Bookstore in Brentwood is pleased to present local author Francesca Lia Block to the shop to discuss and sign her new book for younger readers, House of Dolls, the gorgeously illustrated story of a magical world within a doll house, with black-and-white art throughout by beloved illustrator Barbara McClintock, on Sunday, June 27 at 3pm.
Francesca Lia Block, winner of the prestigious Margaret A. Edwards Award, is the author of many acclaimed and bestselling books, including Weetzie Bat, Dangerous Angels: The Weetzie Bat Books, Necklace of Kisses, and the collection of stories Blood Roses. Diesel, A Bookstore in Oakland is excited to present the fabulous Aimee Bender as she discusses and signs her new novel, The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, the lush and moving story of a girl whose magical gift is really a devastating curse, on Sunday, June 27 at 3pm.
Aimee Bender is the author of The Girl in the Flammable Skirt, which was a NY Times Notable Book, An Invisible Sign of My Own which was an L.A. Times pick of the year, and Willful Creatures, which was nominated by The Believer as one of the best books of the year.
Her short fiction has been published in Granta, GQ, Harper's, Tin House, McSweeney's, The Paris Review, and many more, as well as heard on PRI's This American Life and Selected Shorts. She's received two Pushcart prizes, and was nominated for the James Tiptree. Jr. Award in 2005.
She lives in Los Angeles, and teaches creative writing at USC.

Litquake’s Epicenter - a free monthly series of informal gatherings for the literary-minded – moves to the East Bay Sunday, June 27. Join Diesel, A Bookstore in Oakland and the East Bay on the Brain reading series from 6-8 p.m. at Rockridge drinking hole Ben ’N Nick’s as we co-host this free event. No need to RSVP, just come ready to meet other lit lovers, writers, readers, and the folks who put together Litquake, San Francisco’s Literary Festival.
East Bay on the Brain (EBOB) is a quarterly reading series featuring East Bay writers. Founded and hosted by Lauren Becker, EBOB aims to collaborate with local reading series and events, literary journals, writing programs, book sellers, artists, writers, and readers to build a more cohesive literary presence on the other side of the bridge.
Join us for a beer at Ben ’N Nick’s, only a few paces from Rockridge BART, and talk all things literary!
