Larkspur - Tara Duggan demos and signs "Root to Stalk Cooking"
Diesel, A Bookstore in Larkspur welcomes award-winning food journalist Tara Duggan to the store and the Marin Country Farmers' Market to demo and sign her new book, Root to Stalk Cooking, on Saturday, September 21st at 11:30 am.
There are a lot of parts of vegetables we don't typically use: carrot tops, corn cobs, broccoli stalks, and watermelon rinds, just to name a few. These are pieces of vegetables that we typically discard or toss into the compost bin. After all, they're just the inevitable, inedible scraps trimmed off the good stuff. Right?
Well, maybe not -- but putting aside the question of edibility, just think of how much of the vegetables you buy is going to waste. When that bunch herbs turn to goop in the fridge, or when you peel the skin off a bag of potatoes, or chop off the leek greens, how many dollars does that actually represent? Maybe just a few at a time, but it all adds up, and when you take into account families across the whole country, across the world, the numbers ramp up quickly. A lot of food is being wasted.
That's where Root to Stalk Cooking: The Art of Using the Whole Vegetable aims to help, using a simple secret grandmothers and restauranteurs know: there's a lot more to the vegetable than you think. This cookbook details various ways to utilize every part of a plant, demonstrating how to lessen our environmental footprint while saving a few dollars in the kitchen. With more than 65 recipes, Tara Duggan explains all the different parts of a vegetable while making a whole meal with limited resources, easily transitioning from one recipe to another with the same vegetable.
Tara Duggan is a regular contributor to the San Francisco Chronicle and the New York Times Bay Area Report. She is the recipient of a James Beard Foundation Award for food journalism and the author of The Working Cook; Waffles, Any Time; and The Burger. She lives in San Francisco with her husband and two daughters and spends weekends at her family's off-the-grid organic farm in Mendocino, where she gets ideas for what to do with all kinds of kitchen scraps.
Please Note: This multi-part event will begin under the big tent at the Marin Country Mart Farmers' Market at 10:30 am, where Tara will demonstrate how to make a delicious meal using all the parts of fresh, organic, farmers' market ingredients. Then, at 11:30 am, the event will move inside our store for book signing and further discussion.
