Oakland - Gary Kamiya discusses and signs "Cool Gray City of Love"
Diesel, A Bookstore in Oakland welcomes author Gary Kamiya to the store to sign his new book, Cool Gray City of Love: 49 Views of San Francisco, on Sunday, August 18th at 3pm.
Cool Gray City of Love is an ode to, and a compilation of historical portraits of, let's all admit it, one of the greatest cities in the world: San Francisco. Her history, like that of all great cities, is richly variegated, a colorful tapestry of highs and lows: the great fire and earthquake of 1906, the dotcom boom, the Gold Rush of '49, the AIDS tragedy and triumph, the patriotic urgings of Rosie the Riveter, the eruption of the Beats, and the infamy of Alcatraz. Unabashedly frank about her dark sides as well, author, local, and avid lover of the city, Gary Kamiya captures the essence of San Francisco in forty-nine chapters that focus on the famous neighborhoods, the landmark events and sights that make San Francisco what it is today.
Gary Kamiya co-founded the short-lived Frisko, then spent five years as culture critic and books editor of the San Francisco Examiner's magazine. He left to co-found Salon, where he was executive editor and then a columnist. His first book, Shadow Knights, was a history of Britain's Special Operations Executive. He is married, with two children, to the novelist Kate Moses.
