Independent bookstores and small record labels are pretty similar. We've got to carve out an identity that is attractive, strong, malleable and relevant, sensitive to the whims of culture and yet fiercely idealistic.

We here at Diesel are thrilled to be celebrating 20 years of independent bookselling in Oakland, and 2009, too, marks the 20th anniversary of Merge Records. What better way to celebrate two decades of effortless greatness than with the publication of a seriously cool book?
