The first time I chose to
not finish a book I was eight-years-old and quit 50 pages into
Playing Beatie Bow , a cryptic and horrendously creepy junior reader about ghoulish little girls and time travel to filthy 1870's Australia. The accusing ghost of Beatie Bow has haunted me ever since. Now I choose more carefully and finish everything I start (and if someone could loan me a copy of that book I'd be eternally grateful).
...And here is some
more inspiration .

Rounded-out by the thirty-page perfection that is Brokeback
Mountain , this collection of short fiction will take you to the dusty
stretches of modern America, which (appropriately) hang somewhere
between Cormac McCarthy's Mexico and Alice Munro's Canada. Proulx's
stories are shocking and dazzling--her language economical and
brilliantly precise.

This book does for religion what The Omnivore's Dilemma did for
food. Equal parts personal memoir and academic explication, it's a
must for anyone born into or influenced by organized religion (that's
you, America!). Renegade ex-priest Sentilles offers her life story and
theological insights, explaining why attending seminary finally lead
her to "break up with God." It's an important book because, no matter
where you fall on the question of organized religion, she's demanding
clarity in an increasingly cloudy social dialogue.

Sibling rivalry, seaside reflections, and the title story, which is
actually about vikings--but in a funny way. I'm reminded of a cynical
Miranda July. This is Tower's debut collection, which is always fun
because, like a good first record, I'm excited and a little afraid to
see what he'll do next.

A refreshingly well-rounded look at the ethical dilemmas surrounding
food (production, transportation, consumption) from a new dad just
trying to do right by his kid. Informative, but also a genuinely
enjoyable read. Safran Foer has a gift for bringing the reader into
his experience until you are not a reader so much as a participant.

An original enough concept: each chapter one day of a twenty-year,
star-crossed, When Harry Met Sally sort of relationship between
funny girl, Em, and prep-school heartthrob, Dex. Expecting some
serious pop-lit fluff (and MAYBE a good cry), I was bowled over by how
hilarious and, alternately, devastatingly true it all is. Sobfest. So
good.
