"My reading varies between fiction, poetry, religious studies, essays, letters, and food writing. I want to be inspired, and challenged by what I read."
...And here is some more inspiration.
Reginald Dwayne Betts, a 16-year old honor student, used a pistol to carjack a man who had been sleeping in his vehicle. Shortly thereafter he was caught, sentenced as an adult and sent to an adult prison, where he served more than eight years (including one year in solitary at a supermax facility).
In his interview with Terry Gross last year, Betts talks about the title of his latest collection of poetry. He states that it is an instinctive, primal desire for human beings (along with every other species on the planet) to protect their young. In the 80's President Regan initiated a program of mandatory minimum sentencing and a draconian cut in outreach, intervention, and other social services. A whole generation of young people were abandoned and brought up on the streets or in the incarceration system. This book of poetry is an anatomy of the process of that neglect and its outcome. -- Terry S.
Amazing read! This is Catling's first full length novel. His book of prose," Bobby Awl", was published in 2007. He also has six books of poetry to his name and solo exhibitions dating back to 1986. Catling is a seasoned artist with a distinct voice and narrative style.
Han Shan(Cold Mountain) was a Taoist/Buddhist who retreated into the mountains and wrote his poetry on rocks, trees and the sides of temples over a thousand years ago. He was known for his off putting appearance and wild sense of humor. His writing is poignant and at times chastising. This translation is my my favorite and Red Pine's Preface along with John Blofeld's Introduction(reprinted from the 1983 edition), provide vital insight into the personality and times of this fascinating poet.
I started making my own stocks and broths about two years ago and I haven't looked back. There is no comparison between homemade and store bought stocks. Morrell points out that the difference is not only in flavor. Home broths and stocks have helped us to survive hard winters and heal from illness for most of human history. This book has something to offer both beginner and seasoned cooks. It is also a passionate manifesto on the importance of preserving our cooking traditions.
Reading these poems makes me homesick for the countryside. I can smell the soil and feel the changing of the seasons in his poems.
Szymbroska weaves history with the intimacy of everyday events in a way that is both playful and shocking. If you read only one poem this year let it be, The End and the Beginning (p286).
The beginnig of an epic science fiction trilogy. Cixin Liu fluctuates from the micro to the macro at a pace that will give the most grounded reader a sense of vertigo. The Three-Body Problem is steeped in speculative physics, mathamatics, and the all important science fiction question: how would we react to alien contact.
