Brentwood - Diane Leslie's Book Group with Author discusses "Off Course"
Diane Leslie's Book Group with Author meets to discuss Michelle Huneven's novel, Off Course, on Thursday, April 24th at 5pm.
The best part? Michelle Huneven will be joining in the discussion!
It is 1981, and Cressida Hartley, a young PhD candidate in economics, has just moved into her parents’ shabby A-frame in the Sierras. She's hoping to find enough solitude to finish her dissertation on art in the marketplace. Despite herself, though, she is soon drawn into the social life of the small mountain community. There’s Jakey Yates, the local lodge owner, big, burly, and attractive. There’s Rick Garsh, a contractor who gives Cress a part-time job and through whom she meets the Morrow brothers, skilled carpenters who are handsome, amusing, and thoroughly married. Increasingly dissatisfied with her dissertation, Cress falls prey to love, adultery, and obsession, and becomes the victim of her own perilous reasoning. For a young, intelligent woman seeking her place in life, love is the great distraction, and impossible love the greatest of all.Michelle Huneven is the author of Blame and a recipient of the Whiting Writers' Award in 2002, a GE Younger Writers Award in Fiction and a James Beard Award. She is presently a restaurant reviewer for LA Weekly. Her first novel, Round Rock, was named a New York Times Notable Book and a Los Angeles Times Best Book of the Year. She lives in Altadena, California.
