Being a mom is hard -- and being a perfect mother is an impossible, unachievable standard. And yet, every mom has felt a creeping sense of guilt and shame. Now, Emmy-nominated comedy writer Glenn Boozan offers a surprising antidote to “mom guilt”: There Are Moms Way Worse Than You. Here, Boozan offers reassurance to panicky parents in hilariously crafted rhyming couplets, depicting the outlandishly terrible parenting practices of the animal kingdom.
Delightfully funny illustrations by Priscilla Witte take readers on a tour of terrible animal parenting -- from neglectful cuckoo birds to pushy giraffes, who are known to kick their calves until they walk. Humor is packed into every page as expressive animals demonstrate their very worst behavior, and the charming rhyme offers a hysterical reality check, as Boozan reminds parents that there are far worse things than fast food for dinner or too much screen time:
You won’t be worse than hamster moms, no matter how you try. Sometimes they eat their newborn pups. We still don’t yet know why.
Whenever you feel guilty that you haven’t cleaned the house: Sexton beetles raise their kids in a decomposing mouse.
With both wit and compassion, Boozan asks moms to accept that there is no such thing as a perfect parent, and to be proud of the everyday effort parenting takes, while reminding the reader that it’s the hardest, and best, job in the world. And hey, if you’re not feeding your child poop, a la the koala, you are doing an amazing job. In the end, Boozan redeems even these terrible animal parents, with an appendix offering more context to the animals’ behavior. Koalas, horses, even adorable harp seals: they (and you!) are all just doing the best they can.
Glenn Boozan is an Emmy- and WGA-nominated comedy writer whose credits include Conan, Comedy Central’s Lights Out with David Spade, Sarah Silverman’s I Love You, America on Hulu, and TruTV’s Adam Ruins Everything. She lives in Los Angeles, a 30-minute drive from her mother, which apparently is still too far.
