Oakland - Edan Lepucki discusses and signs "California"
Diesel, A Bookstore in Oakland welcomes Edan Lepucki to the store to discuss and sign her new novel California on Thursday, July 10th at 7pm.
In a frighteningly real, mid-apocalyptic, near future, Los Angeles is a crumbling ruin. Cal and Frida live in a shack in the wilderness, struggling through isolation and hardship. But when Frida discovers she’s pregnant, they realize that they need to connect with other survivors. A fortified rogue encampment in the woods (with ties to Frida’s past it turns out) offers hope at first, but unsettling aspects about the place – the lack of children, a despotic leader, ties to an underground group linked to a suicide bombing – bring them quickly to a crossroads between humanity’s dark nature and its deep-seated need to protect one's loved ones.
Edan Lepucki is a staff writer at The Millions, and her short fiction has been published in McSweeney's and Narrative Magazine, among others. She is the author of the novella If You’re Not Yet Like Me.

In the recent (on-going) struggle between Amazon and Hachette, many authors have come forward to weigh in, among them best-selling Sherman Alexie, who also used the opportunity on The Colbert Report to plug Edan Lepucki's California. The whole thing is worth watching, but skip to 2:15 for Sherman's excellent recommendation. And don't forget to pre-order the book below.
