A faith-filled lyrical account of the day President Obama sang with a grieving nation following the 2015 shooting in a Black church in Charleston, South Carolina.
July 29th, 2019; Petaluma, California: When nine people were killed in a historic Black church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015, the nation grieved as one. When President Barack Obama sang Amazing Grace during his eulogy for Reverend Clementa Pinckney, it was acknowledged as one of the most powerful moments of his presidency.
Singer/songwriter Zoe Mulford was so moved by this moment in history, that she wrote the song “The President Sang Amazing Grace,” which was heard by 79-year-old folk legend, Joan Baez, who knew she had to record the new song—reflective of a new time in American history—and included in her final album, Whistle Down The Wind. Joan Baez’s rendition of Zoe Mulford’s original song “The President Sang Amazing Grace” has been animated in a powerful new video by Jeff Scher, that has been viewed countless times.
A tribute to the ties that bind us, rather than divide us, the book The President Sang Amazing Grace presents the lyrics to Mulford’s song, Scher’s paintings, an excerpt from President Obama’s eulogy, biographies of those who were killed, along with historical context and sheet music.
Zoe Mulford is a singer/songwriter. She is based in Philadelphia and Manchester, UK.
