Thursday, March 14th @ 6:30 pm - Paul Cummins discusses and signs "Paul Cummins: The Collected Poems"
DIESEL, A Bookstore in Brentwood welcomes Paul Cummins to the store to discuss and sign Paul Cummins: The Collected Poems on Thursday, March 14th at 6:30 pm. Please note that this event will take place in the lower outdoor courtyard adjacent to our store.
Paul Cummins, a renowned educator and social justice activist, entered the world of poetry in 1966 while writing a doctoral dissertation on the poetry of two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Richard Wilbur at USC. This book, selected from the nearly 600 poems written between 1966-2017, offers a clear and often inspiring voice with brilliant and sacred imagery. This volume includes sonnets, prose poems, odes as well as various metered, and stanzaic poems.
Cummins likens the absolute quiet that he requires to create as his own mini-temple. Where usually the act of creation is deliberate, it occasionally startles Cummins, “Sometimes, poems just appear, such as ‘Red Rover’ which wrote itself in my head while driving, and I had to pull over on the side of the road to capture it”.
In addition to poems about everyday life, the subjects of these selections occasionally delve into literature and history as in “HCE: A Son-Not (?)”, and “Endsandbeginsand,” each providing a nod to Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake, and war poems featuring subjects from Buchenwald, Nagasaki, and Vietnam.
Cummins offers a rare blend of depth and accessibility. These poems, while addressing the core issues of human experience, also offer genuine aesthetic treats such as unusual forms, rhyme & rhythm in synch, assonance, and imagery. Even the seemingly simplest of poems contain artistry to enjoy.
Paul Cummins, renowned educator and founder, CEO, and President of Coalition for Engaged Education (formerly New Visions Foundation) is committed to creating opportunities for all children to have equitable access to a quality education. He has founded and co-founded numerous schools including Crossroads School, New Roads School, Camino Nuevo Charter School, and New Village Charter School, as well as P.S. Arts, an NPO providing art classes to children in Title I schools. Cummins has published four books on education, a biography, two volumes of his original poetry, and two children's books.
Paul Cummins: The Collected Poems will be released in March and be available for purchase at the event.
